In 1735,
Carolus Linnaeus published the first edition of his Systema
Naturae, which set forth his system for classifying all
living things. It has since been continually revised and
expanded. In spite of its limitations and faults, the
Linnaean system was universally used for 270 years.
That system has since
become obsolete due to the widespread adoption of the new
Cladistics classification
system, which is based on the development of physical
characteristics and arranges organisms by their order of
branching in an evolutionary tree.
It has been used in most universities and colleges since the
late 1990s and is now finding it ways into the grade schools.
This new poster shows this new system.
Simultaneous with this revolutionary change in
classification systems, many new species have been discovered.
Some have been so unique, that they have been given their own
phylum / clade. This all-new version of this poster now include
clades of extinct species. The result is a comprehensive
overview of all life that has lived on Earth. The number of
phyla / clades has jumped from 27 to 41.
