This
highly detailed poster provides a comprehensive overview of the famous
bomber than helped bring Nazi Germany to its knees. The largest picture
is of a B-17F, “Homesick Angel,” of the 388th Bombardment Group. It is
shown in the olive drab “war paint” that typified the aircraft. Below it
is a cross-section view of B-17G “Five Grand” from the 96th Bomb Group.
Its name was the result of it being the 5,000th B-17 to be produced by
Boeing’s Seattle plant. This cross-section view faithfully illustrates
the cockpit, gunner positions, bomb load, structure and much more. A
large head-on view of B-17G, ”Nine-O-Nine,” of the 91st Bombardment
Group shows details of the forward-firing chin and top turrets.
Seven additional illustrations show different versions / war paint. They
are (1) the Boeing Model 299, or XB-17, (2) B-17C that served with the
Royal Air Force in 1941, (3) B-17E “Dixie Demo,” of the 92nd Bomb Group.
An early 1942 model, she reflects more than 30% of the aircraft being
redesigned from earlier models, (4) YB-40 Experimental gun ship to
escort the bombers, (5) PB-1W served with the United States Navy, (6)
PB-1G used by U.S. Coast Guard for Air-Sea rescue, (7) Large drawing of
the B-17G of the 398th Bomb Group, showing redesigned turrets and the
natural metal finish introduced in early 1944.
Well-written and documented text provides a history and operational
overview of the bomber. Insets provide details on the armament,
dimensions and performance, significant dates, and a list of all the 8th
and 20th Air Force Bombardment Groups that flew them. 24.75” x 35”.
