Called the ultimate reconnaissance aircraft, the SR-71 collected
intelligence for the U.S. Department of Defense and USAF for many
years. Designed to replace the high altitude U-2 spy plane, the SR-71
could fly three times the speed for sound at altitudes in excess of
20,000 feet. It was kept so secret that no there was no public
knowledge of the aircraft until unveiled by President Johnson in 1964.
Although the exact number has never been made public, it is believed
that 24 were built.
The magnificent full-color poster presents a highly detailed side
view of Blackbird No. 54-17972 flown by the 55th Strategic
Reconnaissance Wing of Offutt AFB, Nebraska. In 1964, this aircraft set
a New York City-to-London speed record, covering 3,490 miles in only one
hour and 55 minutes. Additional pictures show in-flight refueling from
a KC-135, a U-2 spy plane, the landing chute deployed, cockpit openings
and the new Lockheed D-21 reconnaissance drone.
This airplane poster is filled with information: history of the
aircraft, world records it has set, performance data, specifications,
and important facts. 24.75” x 35”.
