The Milky Way is the galaxy that is the
home of our Solar System. Recent estimates are that it
contains over 400 billion stars and their planets, thousands of nebulae
and clusters. These include almost all objects listed in Messier's catalog which are not galaxies on their own. All
the objects in the Milky Way Galaxy orbit their common center of mass,
called the Galactic Center. As a galaxy, the Milky Way is actually
a giant, as its diameter is about 100,000 light years. This poster
provides an excellent summary of what we have so far learned about the
Milky Way, incorporating knowledge gained by the Hubble Telescope and
various space probes. Major heavenly bodies are identified and
inserts show the common types of stars, nebulae, clusters and more.
20" x 31" full-color poster.
